  • Businesses with multiple locations — a chain of shops, a hospitality group, an office plus a warehouse. One solar installation can credit several consumption bills under the same beneficiary.

How virtual net billing Cyprus works in practice

Step 1 — Install solar at a suitable site

This could be your own land elsewhere on the island, a rooftop on a different property you own, or a shared community installation. The site needs good sun exposure, grid access and the relevant permissions.

Step 2 — The panels feed energy into the EAC grid

Whatever your panels produce passes through the meter at the installation site and into the EAC distribution network. The EAC measures it precisely.

Step 3 — Credits get applied to your consumption bill

The energy your panels produced (in euros, at the wholesale rate) is credited against the energy you consumed at your home or business (charged at the retail rate). Your bill shows the difference. If you produced more than you used in the billing period, you get a credit carried forward — but at the wholesale price, not the retail price.

Step 4 — The maths is done in euros, not kWh

This is the most important shift to understand. Under the old net metering, surplus energy was stored as kWh and offset directly against your future consumption. Under virtual net billing Cyprus, surplus is stored as money on your account at the wholesale rate. When you draw from the grid later, you’re charged the retail rate. So the more of your own solar you can use at the time it’s being generated, the better off you are.

 

Why a battery makes a real difference

Under the old net metering, a battery was nice to have. Under virtual net billing Cyprus, a battery is what closes the gap between selling cheap and buying expensive.

Without a battery, every kWh of solar you don’t use immediately gets sold at the wholesale rate — and every kWh you need in the evening gets bought back at the retail rate. With a battery, your daytime solar gets stored instead of exported. In the evening you discharge the battery instead of buying retail electricity from the grid. You’ve kept your own kWh at full retail value rather than swapping it for wholesale value.

What’s happening on the grid right now: curtailments and credit resets

Two things every solar customer in Cyprus should know about, because they’re playing out as you read this.

Curtailments are getting more common. When the grid has too much solar at midday and not enough demand, the EAC can remotely disconnect solar systems to keep the network stable. CERA confirmed in a March 2026 letter that operators have the right to do this “without limitation and at any time” if it’s needed to prevent overloads. With more solar coming online every month, this is going to keep increasing. The fix? A battery, so the energy you would have exported gets stored on your own property instead of lost.

Net metering credits are now resetting every 36 months. If you’re an existing net metering customer, the EAC began clearing accumulated surplus credits in February 2026 on a 36-month rolling basis. Some households who’d built up substantial credits saw them wiped to zero with no advance warning.
